Postpartum Doula Support (and Breastfeeding Counseling)

Let one of our doulas help you settle in after you take your baby home. Not quite sure what you will do once the baby is home? Wondering how to bath your baby? What if you have challenges with breastfeeding? Struggling with changing nappies? Perhaps you are wanting to talk about your birth experience – ‘debrief’ your birth, if you will.

Breastfeeding may be "natural" but it doesn't always come naturally right away! Changing nappies on a newborn might seem easy enough until you get home, bathing is pretty basic as well. Sometimes all you need is some help and support to get you through that time while you and your baby are still getting the hang of it. You may be hearing all sorts of advice. We can help you know what really helps, and what doesn't.

The early days of breastfeeding can be tough. Many women are told they will be unable to breastfeed successfully because of the shape or size of their breasts, or because they are not making enough milk, or because they have a "greedy" baby. This is very rarely the case. Usually, once a woman understands how breastfeeding works, is helped to achieve a good position with the baby at her breast, and feels encouraged and supported, she is able to breastfeed successfully.

Sometimes women are told to expect breastfeeding to be painful – that this is normal. Again, untrue. Breastfeeding should not hurt. Pain during feeding is an indication that there is a problem. In most cases it is related to positioning of the baby and is relatively straightforward to correct. If you are experiencing any of the following, postpartum doula visits will aide you with:

  • sore or bleeding nipples
  • a "fussy" baby
  • engorgement or uncomfortable breasts
  • a baby who never seems to stop feeding
  • a sleepy baby who does not wake for feeds
  • a baby who has become used to a bottle and is refusing to feed from the breast

One of our postpartum doulas can visit your home to provide assistance and support. She will watch you feed your baby and identify what might be changed to help resolve your problems. She will provide instruction with hands on support for changing nappies, bathing your baby, discussing your lochia, your birth experience and generally aide you in settling in with a newborn.

Cost:

A Postpartum doula visit is $95 an hour. A range of packages is also available:

  • 5 hours for $450
  • 8 hours for $685
  • 10 hours for $855
