| Breastfeeding may be "natural" but it doesn't
always come naturally right away! Sometimes all you need is some help
and support to get you through that time while you and your baby are
still getting the hang of it. You may be hearing all sorts of advice. We
can help you know what really helps, and what doesn't. |
The early days of breastfeeding can be tough. Many women are told they
will be unable to breastfeed successfully because of the shape or size
of their breasts, or because they are not making enough milk, or because
they have a "greedy" baby. This is very rarely the case. Usually, once a
woman understands how breastfeeding works, is helped to achieve a good
position with the baby at her breast, and feels encouraged and
supported, she is able to breastfeed successfully.
Sometimes women are told to expect breastfeeding to be painful – that
this is normal. Again, untrue. Breastfeeding should not hurt.
Pain during feeding is an indication that there is a problem. In most
cases it is related to positioning of the baby and is relatively
straightforward to correct. If you are experiencing any of the
following, a breastfeeding consultation may be
able to help you: |
-
sore or bleeding nipples
-
a "fussy" baby
-
engorgement or uncomfortable breasts
-
a baby who never seems to stop feeding
-
a sleepy baby who does not wake for feeds
-
a baby who has become used to a bottle and is refusing to feed from
the breast

One of our breastfeeding counsellors can visit
your home to provide assistance and support. She will watch you feed
your baby and identify what might be changed to help resolve your
problems.
Breastfeeding counselling sessions are charged at an hourly rate. The
first hour is $85. The cost is then $40 for each subsequent half hour or
part thereof. Minimum charge is $85. (Please note that if you have a
labour supporter (doula) at
your birth, she will provide breastfeeding support as part of
your doula package.)
To arrange a breastfeeding consultation, please call
Tania at 65.9671.8428
