| Linda comes from a country
where having a baby at home is the norm, and birth is seen in a
particularly encouraging light. But when she became pregnant with her
first baby after moving to Singapore, she found herself having to ask
herself the same questions many women do: what do I want for my birth?
what is important to me? After finding her own answers, Linda began to
be interested in supporting other families through this decision-making,
and that's what brought Linda to doula work: the desire to help other
families find what is right for them. She is completing her training
with Childbirth International. |
Coming from the Netherlands, where natural childbirth and homebirth are
the norm rather than the exception, I
experienced quite a culture shock when I found myself pregnant in
Singapore. Being completely new to pregnancy and childbirth, the stories
I heard and the advice I received here were so foreign to me. A small
identity crisis followed, similar to the one I had to endure when we had
just moved halfway around the world and had to settle in this new
country we now call home. I never imagined having to deal with such
profound questions, but here I was, trying to figure out who I was and
what I wanted.
When I came into contact with ParentLink, I started to realize how many
options were actually available when giving birth in Singapore. I
started to feel more confident while carving out my own path, with my
husband and my doula by my side. The birth itself was an intense and
amazing experience; I had never felt so strong and so proud of my own
abilities! After this, my passion for childbirth intensified. My second and
third daughters were born at home. All three of my births have taken me to
new and amazing places, and let me discover strengths I didn't think I had.
Pregnancy and birth are a miracle each time. I decided to turn my
passion into my profession, and to use my enthusiasm to the benefit of
others. Witnessing parents take their own wonderful journey makes my job
very fulfilling. I believe that I get to see people at their very best,
as they make their own choices, discover their own strengths, and best of
all, bring a beautiful new life into this world!
Life brought my husband and me to Singapore almost seven years ago, and we
love living here with our three beautiful little girls. Besides English,
I also speak Dutch and German.
