| Sandy found that after having
her first baby, she couldn't stop reading pregnancy books and talking
about birth. It was clearly time for a career change! |
After my first son was born, theoretically it would
have made sense for me to have moved on from devouring pregnancy books
to soaking up books about babies and parenting. But my fascination with
pregnancy and birth kept me squarely in the big-bellies section of the
bookstore.
When I started out into my first pregnancy, I didn't really think of
birth in terms of choices. But as I looked around at all the faces of
the other parents-to-be in the waiting room of the doctor's office I
could see we were all different, and just as we might choose different
careers, holiday destinations, or ways to spend our weekends, we might
also prefer different approaches to pregnancy and birth. I learned a lot
about myself through my two births. The satisfaction in finding the
choices that were right for me and my husband led me to want to be part
of helping other parents discover what was right for them.
I have fond memories of all the parents I have accompanied through
birth, and despite having to get up for work at 3:00 a.m. lots of times,
I still think that everyone who hears about what I do must surely be
envious of the amazing process I get to witness: the birth of a whole
new person. And it's not just the baby who comes out new, either. Birth
is about the emergence of parents as well, and it's my privilege and
pleasure to sit beside those who are finding their own way on their own
unique journey.
I have lived in Canada, the United States, England, Northern Ireland,
and now Singapore (for the past 8 years). In my previous pre-childbirth
life, I was an editor and production manager in book publishing, mostly
in Toronto. My husband and I have two boys who each have enough energy
in their little bodies to run an electrical generator that could power a
small city. We do our best to keep up.
