| Tania's passion for pregnancy
and birth began with the birth of her own twins nearly fifteen years
ago, and led to her professional training as a doula and childbirth
educator. Extending her interest in supporting families through the
whole childbearing year, she is also a certified baby massage
instructor. |
In 1991, I gave birth to beautiful twin girls, Brittney and Jessica (WOW!
I cannot believe they are almost adults). While I considered my birth experience to
have been positive, postnatally I did have to
endure the ups and downs that can accompany premature babies. After we were
all home and healthy, I began to reflect on the whole experience and question what
I would do differently next time.
Twelve months later I had the privilege of supporting my dearest
friend through her transition to motherhood. It was
this experience that opened my eyes. During the long hours of her labour in a birthing centre in
northern New South Wales, my fascination was also born. That experience taught me two
important things: first, with every
decision we face, there are always options. Second, every birth is unique. I was hooked!
After moving to Singapore I embarked on the necessary training to become a doula.
In five years of providing labour support I've had the honour of
witnessing many women become mothers and men become fathers. No two have been the
same, except for the wonder that is childbirth.
My third daughter, Reilly, was born in 2004, at home, caught by her daddy's hands, with my older daughters, doctor, and doulas
looking on. This experience only reaffirmed for
me that I'm in the best line of work as a doula, childbirth educator, baby
massage instructor and owner of ParentLink. To add to my forever-widening
workload, I am also a trainer with Childbirth International and have offered training workshops
on three continents.
One of ParentLink's greatest strengths is
how we work as a team. We
have been present at each other's births and we provide constant support to
whichever doula is with a couple during labour. No company in Singapore offers the level of
service and backup we do. We also ensure we keep our doulas' own education up to date.
Originally from Sydney, I have lived in Singapore for 13 years and
consider it my home. My gorgeous girls teach me something new about
parenting every day and I also have a very supportive husband who would make
a great doula himself!
Being present at such a momentous occasion in a couple's life is a
privilege. There is nothing more rewarding than to see a woman have her birth, her way!
